BEIRUT, LebanonJordanian authorities rounded up as many as 300 members of the Moslem Brotherhood Organization on the orders of King Hussein, the leftist Al Safir newspaper said Saturday.
The newspaper, quoting Arab diplomatic sources, said between 250 and 300 Moslem fundamentalist members of the banned organization had been detained by authorities in a crackdown that began Monday.
Hussein’s order called on authorities to act against the brotherhood by stopping “any exploiting usurper using the tenets of Islam in different meanings to the noble aims of the heavenly messages,” a reference to the Moslem holy book, the Koran.
The crackdown followed Hussein’s surprise disclosure that Moslem fundamentalists used Jordan as a base for their “sabatoge” attacks on neighboring Syria, without his knowledge.
