NEW DELHI: Some fifty members, including chairperson of the Rajya Sabha (upper house of Indian Parliament) are due to retire between May and October this year.

The current deputy Chairperson Najma Heptullah, two former ministers   MS. Gurupada swamy and Dr Raja Ramana will complete their six-year term this year. Even as the process for filling 18 seats has already commenced the union minister of state for public grievances and pensions, Margaret Alva, is among the 18 members of the house due to retire on April two. The presidential notification to fill these vacancies from seven States was issued on Friday.

The first round of Biennial election of the year would be completed before March27, according, to the notification.

Four nominated members are among the 50 more due to retire: this year. They are M.-F. Hussain, noted painter, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Sitar Maestro, R.K. Narayan and Mrs Amrita Pritam, well-known Litterateurs.

AS per the constitution, Rajya Sabha is not subject to dissolution and one-third of its 245 members retire on expire of their tem every second year.
