OTTAWA: Tax cheating coasted government $2.3 billion in the last year. A study by economist Peter Spiro says that there has been a substantial increase in the underground economy since the introduction of the GST. The underreporting of income means that not only GST revenue is lost but also the associated income tax and the provincial sales taxes. The continued cost to provincial and federal government was 2.3 billion last year.
