ISLAMABAD: Former premier Benazir Bhutto’s husband, Asif Zardari, facing charges of corruption and cheating, Tuesday said if he was arrested, he would contest the general elections from jail.
Asif Zardari has been fielded as a candidate of the Pakistan People’s Party from the Nawabshah national assembly constituency and is likely to be pitted against the caretaker Prime Minister, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi.
Zardari told reporters he was “not afraid” of the cases registered against him and would not bow before the “intimidatory” tactics resorted to by the Jatoi government.
Zardari, on anticipatory bail till September 18, is implicated in cases relating to scandals involving duty free shops and imported cars.
In Karachi, Bhutto announced the formation of the People’s Democratic Alliance grouping Pakistan People’s party, TehriIIstiqlal, Tehrik NifazIJafaria and the Malik Mohammad Qasim faction in the Pakistan Muslim League for the polls.
The PDA has decided to contest the elections under common symbol “arrow” and a joint manifesto would be drawn up soon, Bhutto said.
