LUDHIANA: The police, last week, picked up a man from Ludhiana which is out of their jurisdiction and tortured him badly on the basis of a complaint that turned out to be totally false.

Mr, Tarlochan Singh (38), resident of the urban estate, Dugri, ‘was summoned here to the police chowki of the Locality around 6:30 a.m. and given sound beating by the Raikot police party headed by Jaspal Singh Chor, Assistant Sub Inspector.

Mr, Singh who received at least 10 injuries on his legs, arms, forehead and back, said that he was picked up on a false complaint lodged by Mr. Sukhminder Si of Burundi village at the behest of some lower level police officials who wanted to teach him a lesson since he had complained to high police officials about the police chowki and police commandos in the locality due to which many of the cops posted there were transferred. When his relatives went to seek his release, Deputy Superintendent of Police Paramjit Singh Kheha also allegedly misbehaved with them. Mr, Singh was let off in the evening, but not before his Relatives had paid Rs 5000 to the police and assured to pay other Rs 8000. ‘The police, he alleged, had made out a case that he owed Mr. Sukhminder Singh Rs 13000.
