BELJING (PTI): The 14th National Congress of the Chinese Communist party ended its week-long session Oct. 18 after affirming the line of reform and modernization laid down by Deng Xiaoping and electing a central committee packed with newer and younger faces.
The Congress unanimously held that the objective of economic restructuring and setting up a socialist market economy was an “enrichment and development of the theory of building socialism with Chinese characteristics” that was proposed by Denga decade ago.
A fairly high growth rate with better economic results is a correct and possible goal to achieve,” it said, in a compromise formulation following debates among the advocates of high speed and the so-called cautious conservatives.
The highest decision-making body, the central committee, admitted 46.7% new faces, according to an official announcement.
The new central committee has an average age of 56.3 and as many as 61% of them are below the age 55, the announcement recorded,
