ROME, Oct. 9, Reuter: World Food Day, 1986 will be dedicated to fisherman, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said today, describing them as one of the most neglected rural communities.
There will be conference and school essay contests in more than 150 countries to mark the event, which falls next Thursday, the FAO said. President Vigdis Finnbogadottir of Iceland will address special ceremony Vigdis Finnbogadottir in Rome,
Other events will include training courses for fisherman in Laos and Jamaica and workshops in Sri Lankan villages.
Paying tribute particularly to the World’s small scale fisherman, FAO Director General Edward Saouma said today.
“Their work is hard and they risk their lives daily hence they deserve our deepest respect. Yet they are amongst the most neglected stratum of rural communities.”
