WASHING TON (PTI): Women are arrested by the dozen by police in Pakistan reportedly in order to rape them and none of the guilty was  punished, Amnesty International has said.

In Pakistan, “torture was systematic in police and army custody and police arrested dozens of women reportedly in order to rape them, No members of the security forces were brought to justice,” the Amnesty said in its annual report.

Rape involving security forces peers tries but Pakistan was the only country where dozens of women had allegedly been arrested “reportedly in order to rape them.” Members of the Islamic conference which joined Pakistan in criticizing alleged violations of human rights were themselves guilty of massive violations of human rights in their own countries, it said.

Armed opposition groups in at least seven Asian countries including India, Pakistan, Cambodia and Si Lanka, committed gross human rights abuses, including political killings, abductions and torture, the report said, Bangladesh was also cited for alleged torture.

Despite declarations of support for the Universality of human fights at the UN world conference on human rights in June 1993, — many Asian governments continued to allow their security forces to commit “human rights violations of every description throughout the year.”

The report also criticized the United States saying the self-assumed champion of human rights issues annual reports criticizing other countries but not itself.
