NEW DELHI, India: Mortgaging of women is “still prevalent” in certain regions of India, local Press quoted an official as saying.
Maharashtra Revenue Minister VDeshmukh disclosed in the state Legislative Council that a woman in the Beed district was mortgaged with a money lender so that the family could raise a loan for the marriage of one of their daughters.
He conceded that in some backward areas of the state, “‘it is still a common practice” to mortgage women for the purpose of raising money.
