BOMBAY(PTI):The World Health Organization (WHO) will spend 25 million dollars to find new methods of solving population explosion problem in Asia, especially in India and China, Dr.Giuseppe Benagiano, Director of WHO’s special program of research, development and training, has said.
“We are looking for solutions from the people of south Asian counties which is why we started Our Users’ perspective program recently,” he told PTI on his weekend visit to the city, during which he saw the research facility of the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) institute for Research In Reproduction (IRR), which will be one of the WHO Centers.
The sum would be mainly spent on fellowships, clinical trials and research training, he said.
Dr. Benagiano said since “who’s: goodwill program of the 60’s had failed to take into consideration the peoples’ needs, it decided to look beyond the gross or the visible family planning techniques like condoms, IUD, laparoscopy, tubectomy and vasectomy, used in tackling both fertility and infertility problems.”
“In retrospection, we thought of changing our course of action by going (6 the people and interacting with them to find out and learn about their needs in the form of knowledge, technique and technology. Only that will facilitate in gathering knowledge other than the “gross” methods, he said.
