NEW DELHI: The Janata Dal national executive concluded its two-day meeting last week without taking any decision on a merger with the Samajwadi Janata Party (SJP) A decision on the issue was deferred till the return of President-elect V.P.Singh to the country. However it was obvious that the merger bid had run into rough weather with SJP leader Chandra Shekhar voicing his opposition to the election of V.P.Singh as party President without consulting him.
He said that the chances of the SJPs merger with the Janata Dal was now stalled as it had not consulted him on the election of its President. The Janata Dal had initiated a proposal at the Ghaziabad meet to unify the breakaway groups and announced that the process of unification would be completed after the elections he said adding that V. P. Singhs election as Janata Dal President meant rejection of the Ghaziabad proposal. Now since they have rejected me what can I do Chandra Shekhar was quoted as having said in Ranchi.
