NEW DELHI: Prime Minister VP Singh on Tuesday sought to turn the table on the opposition demanding that former prime minister and Congress I president Rajiv Gandhi should follow the example of the Haryana chief minister and tender his resignation owning moral responsibility for the violence in Amethi parliamentary constituency.

After informing the Lok Sabha that Chautala had submitted his resignation to party president S.R. Bommai in view of strident criticism over violence in Meham, the prime minister said, “Mr. Gandhi should resign.”

He said, “I want answers from the leader of the opposition here and now here in this house.”

Hardly had the prime minister finished his demand for Rajiv Gandhi’s resignation several Congress I members, including Vasant Sathe and Shankaranand stood up to lodge their protest.

This sparked off pro and anti-Rajiv Gandhi slogans by the Congress I and Janata Dal members.

The speaker made repeated requests for order but in vain, as the members from both sides continued to indulge in slogan shouting. Amidst uproarious scenes, the speaker abruptly adjourned the house for lunch.
