NEW DELHI-The Janata Dal Leader Vishwanath Patran Singh recently demanded the resignation Of the Central government for having failed to discharge its primary duty to protect the sanctity of the Constitution and judiciary.

 Singh who was talking to newspersons launched scathing attack on the govt for what he called its failure to stop the construction work going on at Ayodhya in violation of the court orders. He criticized the stand taken by the home minister that the Center though convinced that by allowing the construction work at Ayodhya the UP government had prima facie violated the court orders for maintaining the status quo would wait for the Supreme Court verdict before taking action.

 He also said that the attitude of the government was fraught with dangerous consequences for the future of the judiciary and the respect for the Constitution They do not have any business to remain  In office if they are not capable of taking a view and acting firmly on such a crucial issue as this Singh said.

 He said the government which ought to have finalized its stand as soon as it assumed the reins was still dithering. He criticized the home minister for having not acted on the basis of the report submit ted by the parliamentary team headed by Bommai which too had held the UP government court orders. He said that the govt had abdicated its responsibility.

 He described the plea of the home minister that the Center would not fact during the pendency of the case before the Supreme Court specious. The dispute is between two private parties and cannot be an alibi for the inaction on the part of the govt.
