Rarranwali Gharyali: The Valtoha police had picked up 50yearold Surjit Kaur of this remote village (off PattiKhemkaran Road) for a few “Lessons “ for allegedly harboring some suspected men and trying to mediate in a shady deal. Though charges against her are yet to be proved, no case has been registered against her thus far almost two months after her nine days of illegal detention during which she was put through to inhuman torture, administered lashes, given raps on the knockles and boxes on the ears, hit on the head, forced into shock treatment. As the mother of six recuperates from the multiple fractures, pulled shoulders and gashes on one of her legs she wonders: “God knows what sins IT had committed in the past for which I’ve been made to pay such a heavy price.” Having spent more than Rs.15,000 on seeking her release and paying for the medical aid, a major part of her body hands, feet, abdomen and shoulders is still wrapped in bandages. “The money”, she says, “was raised through loans and mortgaging half acre of land. Today my family members are not in a position to take me to Amnitsar for proper treatment. For me no jathedar has come forward to help.
