NEW DELHI: Vijaylakshmi Pandit, the first woman’ president of the UN general assembly and the younger sister of India’s first prime minister Jawahar Lal Nehru, died this morning, according to a message received here.
Pandit, who celebrated her 90th birthday in August, died after a protracted illness at her residence at the outskirts of the Dehra Dun town, Pradesh, where she had been living after she decided to retire from politics.
The end came at 4 a.m.
Pandit is the grand aunt of Rajiv Gandhi and Arun Nehru.
Pandit was the only leader who represented India as its envoy to Moscow, Washington and London at a time when Nehru was shaping the policy of nonalignment.
