AMRITSAR: A US diplomat and two members of the US Congress Jan.10 visited the city to assess the law and order situation in the region

The president of the Punjab Human Rights Organization Ajit Singh Bains called on the team members which comprised Marcid S.D. Bernicat first secretary in the US embassy Charles M.William and James McDermott both from the House of Representatives. He gave them a detailed account of the alleged human rights violations being committed by the police.

 During his talks Bains blamed the state police for letting loose a reign of terror and repression in rural areas. He said a number of youths reportedly picked up by the police for interrogation were eliminated secretly the chairman of the Movement against State Repression Inderjit ij also called on the team.

The team members were later con ducted to Dholin Kalan village near here by the district officials. The panches and sarpanches spoke highly of the police who they said lad brought about peace and tranquility in the region. They denied that the police were indulging in excesses.
