WASHINGTON: The United States would like India to reconsider its stand on the nuclear nonproliferation treaty (NPT) which it has so far refused to sign on the ground that the treaty is discriminatory.

This message was understood to have been conveyed to the Indian Army Chief of Staff Gen S.F.Rodrigues by the Deputy Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger during talks at the State department.

Rodrigues who was on a two week goodwill visit to the US also had meetings with other senior national security and defence officials and discussed mutual interest in further strengthening the relations between the two nations including ties between the military services.

According to US officials the discussions also concerned the security situation in the region

Eagleburger was understood to have expressed US gratification that the Army chiefs of India and Pakistan have been in close touch with each other

Gen Rodrigues also met the US Defence Secretary Donald Atwood and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen Colin Powell.
