ISLAMABAD: The United States on April 30 announced 50 million dollars of the aid to Afghanistan to help reconstruction and rehabilitation in the war-torn country.

Briefing newsmen here, an official of the US Embassy said the aid would be in addition to the 426 million dollar grant given to Kabul since 1988 to develop the agricultural and allied sectors.

He said Washington would encourage Asian Development Bank, World Bank and other international financial institutions to extend assistance for rebuilding Afghanistan. It was a substantial amount of money if properly utilized, he said.

Replying to a question, the official said Washington had not taken any decision to open its mission in Kabul in view of the security situation there. However, he said, stability in Afghanistan would be beneficial for the entire region.
