SRINAGAR: Prominent Kashmiris have suggested’ that Jammu and Kashmir should’ be controlled by the United Nations for five years after which a referendum should be held in the entire State.

Ata seminar convened by the Kashmir Bar Association (KBA) on ‘Selfdetermination the only solution to the Kashmir problem’ earlier last week, a unanimous resolution called fora referendum seeking the people’s decision whether to accede to India or Pakistan or carve out an independent State.

The resolution said that during UN control, the State should be given provisional membership in the world body.

Observers point out the significance of recognizing the third option, thus accommodating the views of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front. The seminar also condemned the alleged atrocities and human rights violations by security forces in the State and demanded the immediate release of some detained militants.

Political leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani of Jamaiteislami, Abdul Gani Lone of Peoples’ Conference, Prof Gani of Muslim Conference and Moulvi Abbas Ansari were among those who attended the seminar.
