NEW DELHI, India: Sukhdev Singh Umranan gal, the adult son of a politician with dubious loyalties, Jiwan Singh Umranangal was shot dead by gunmen in the north Indian state of Punjab, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
The news agency said Sukhdev Singh and his bodyguard were shot by three gunmen as the victims rode on a motor scooter at village Sachianwale near the Sikh holy city of Amritsar. The bodyguard was killed instantly and the Youngman later died in the hospital.
Sukhdev Singh unsuccessfully contested the last Assembly elections on the Akali ticket trom Beas constituency. Mr. Sant Singh Lidhar, who was elected on Congress (J) ticket from this constituency was subsequently killed by some unknown persons last year.
Governor of Punjab, S.S. Ray, the then Chief Minister, S.S. Barnala and his other former ministerial colleagues laid wreaths on the body at the time of cremation ceremonies which took place at his native village Umranangal.
Sukhdev Singh is survived by his widow Harjit Kaur and’ three children.
It may be recalled that Jiwan Singh Umranangal is generally believed to be a Congress agent planted in the Akali Dal. He has been critical of the Sikh struggle in Punjab and has been speaking the language of the Delhi rulers.
