LONDON: The British Parliamentary group of M.P.’s has assured the Punjab Human Rights Organization (P.H.R.O) that they will take up the issue of human rights violations occurring in Punjab, both with the Indian Government and in the British Parliament. This assurance was given to the P.H.R.O at a meeting held at the House of Commons on July 25. This meeting was convened by Keith Vaz M.P for Leicester East in order to get firsthand information on the human nights situation in India in general and Punjab in particular; from D/S. Gill, General Secretary of the P.H.R.O., who is on an official tour abroad.
The meeting, was also attended by more than 50 human rights activists representing all the Sikh organizations and various human rights groups.
Harjit Singh Barrister, President of the U.K. Branch of PH.R.O while introducing Gill to the MPs gave a brief account of the activities of the P.H.R.O and urged them to take up the human rights issue both within the Parliament and with the Indian government.
- Gill explained in detail the human rights situation in the Punjab citing numerous specific cases.
The proceedings of the meeting were released here today by Dr. S.S. Athwal, Secretary of the P.HR.O.
