NEW YORK: The Union Carbide Corporation has denied that its plant in West Virginia in the United States emitted methylisocyanate in 1988.
In 1988, the corporation had no plant anywhere in the world, including West Virana, producing methylisocyanate and there is no question of its emission, it said on Nov 29.
The corporation was commenting on a report which quoted an item by an American toxicologist in New Scientist as saying that during 1988, emissions of methylisocyanate from the Union Carbide’s plant in West Virginia increased almost by two tonnes.
The gas had leaked from Carbide’s Bhopal plant in India in December 1984 killing over 2,500 people in the worst industrial disaster.
