WASHINGTON Reuter: The Reagan Administration said that it would let more Refugees into the United States next year and repeated its commitment to accept all Amerasian children and political prisoners from Vietnam.
Secretary of State George Shultz told a Senate Judiciary Sub Committee that the proposal endorsed by President Reagan called for admitting 70000 refugees next year up from 67000 this year.
This includes an increase over last year for refugees from Eastern Europe the Soviet Union Latin America Africa the near east and Asia he said.
In addition the proposal would include for the first time an unallocated reserve of 4000 admissions to be used by the administration in emergencies.
Refugee admission quotas are set by the administration based on consultation with an action by Congress.
Shultz said the administration remained committed to a policy first announced in 1984 of accepting all children fathered by US. Military personnel during the Vietnam War as well as Vietnamese jailed because of their support for the U.S government during the war
Hanoi suspended interviewing would be refugees in January 1986 seriously setting back the procedure for new admissions to the United States Shultz said.
