UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 11, Reuter: The U.S. Congress, which has blocked millions of dollars in U.N. funding, has given a clear sign it will pay, the American delegate said on Friday.
Vernon Wallters told the General Assembly’s) Budget, but he could not guarantee full funding this year.
‘The United States owes about 250 million dollars, the largest sum owed by any member. That has helped produce a financial crisis that Secretary General Javier Perez De Cuellar predicted would persist in 1988.
Before the United States made an interim payment of 90 million dollars this month. He said he feared for the yearend payroll for 6,500 staff.
Walters told the 159nation committee that the Congress now had agreed to authorize a 193million dollar contribution and “we are committed to paying our United Nations assessment”.
“This week’s action is a clear l signal that the Congress is prepared to resume full funding of the United States share of the United Nations regular budget”, he said.
