WASHINGTON, DC: In a statement in the Congressional Record, Congressman Dan Burton has included, “A list of Lawyers of Punjab who are vulnerable to Police Wrath,” After the abduction. and disappearance of attorney Sukh winder Singh Bhatti by India security forces, 28 of Bhatti’s colleagues filed a complaint with the: High Court of Punjab and Haryana, demanding protection from government-sponsored disappearances, According to Congressman Burton’s statement the 28 lawyers are “in imminent danger of disappearing just like Mr. Bhatti.”

Congressman Burton’s statement also notes the harassment of Surinder Kaur, the ex-wife of Khalistani activist, Kanwar Singh, Dhami. Surinder Kaur has been harassed by the police, who are seeking her testimony against Mr. Dhami. As a result of Indian police harassment, Surinder Kaurhas suffered a nervous breakdown.

The statement cites Amnesty International’s 1994 human rights report which strongly criticized.

India’s oppression of the Sikh nation. Speaking of the report, the: statement said, “The report belies India’s claim that there is “peace” in Punjab, Khalistan. The only “peace” there is enforced by the barrels of guns wielded by half a million occupying troops.” The statement also said, “It is time of India to recognize the and end its brutal occupation Khalistan.’

Amnesty’s human rights report released this month, says that there’ have been no prosecutions for human rights violations in the Sikh homeland, Punjab, Khalistan. It also criticized India’s National Human Rights Commission as” having no effectiveness because of its prohibition on investigating rights violations by Indian army and paramilitary forces.
