WASHINGTON, Reuter: U.S. And Vietnamese officials will meet in Hanoi from August 13 to 16 to continue discussions on 2,434 Americans missing in action since the Vietnam War, the Pentagon said today. The meeting of technical experts will be the third this year and the seventh since the Hanoi government agreed in March, 1985 to try and resolve the missing in action (MIA) issue within two years. There are still 2,434 Americans missing in Southeast Asia since the Vietnam War, including 1,790 in Vietnam.

Vietnam earlier this year promised to investigate possible sightings of Americans in Vietnam, including those who might be held captive without the Hanoi government’s knowledge.

U.S. National Security Council official Richard Childress said on July 2 following a trip to Hanoi that technical talks would be held in August and October and that Vietnamese officials had promised the meetings would be especially productive.
