NEW DELHI: The United Nations is gearing itself to take up the question of human rights more effectively and to chalk out strategies for the coming millennium, Jan Marten son U N undersecretary for human rights, said here Dec 12.

The two world congresses on human rights held in Costa Rica and Dakar, and the third congress in progress in New Delhi, would throw up valuable inputs for a world conference on human rights scheduled for 1993 which will address itself to a long term global Done human rights agenda.

The United Nations has adopted a “triangular approach” involving legislation, implementation and information and education to bring into effect the 60 odd international conventions and instrument’s on human rights, Mr Marten son said.

Describing the worldwide human rights scenario Dec 12, Mr Martenson said, he was “less pessimistic” about the future, as the dramatic events that had unfolded in Eastern Europe in the past year and growing public awareness.
