LUANDA AFRICA: Marrack Goulding a senior U.N. official who flew to Angola to prevent the collapse of a peace agreement has been unable to arrange a meeting with opposition leader Jonas Savimbi.
UN officials said they could not establish telephone contact with Savimbi who is holed up in his highland stronghold in the central city of Huambo. Goulding has already met with Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
Peace accords signed in May 1991 ended a 16-year civil war between the then-Marxist government and the rebel group the National Union for the Total Liberation of Angola.
