Sacramento: A video about Sacramento Sikhs has been released by the Yuba Sutter Regional Arts Council in Marysville, Entitled “Two Homes, One Heart: Sacramento Sikh Women and Their Songs and Dances”, the video is designed to help preserve traditional Punjabi folk songs and dances and to share some of the customs of the Sikhs in order to enhance understanding of their culture in America. The video features segments of Giddha and Banghra performed by about 100 adults and children in Sacramento during the 1992 Baisakhi Festival plus brief explanations of the meanings of the songs, wedding customs, work and family life, the Sikh religion and feelings about living within two cultures. Peter Pillsbury, Superintendent of Schools for the Marysville Joint Unified School District, gives enthusiastic support to the video, “We need more information like this in today’s California,” says Pillsbury, adding that, “this video is especially relevant in the Yuba-Sutter Communities due to the large population of Sikhs. There is so much misunderstanding about the Sikhs hopefully this video will help deepening understanding and appreciation of their culture.”

Two Homes, One Heart will be aired on Sacramento Educational Cable Channel 21 on October 29, 7:00 p.m., and on Channel 5 Cable Vision in Yuba City in the near future.
