JOHANNESBURG :South Africa’s leading trade union leader of Indian origin, Jay Naidoo, and two colleagues have been sentenced to a fine of 2000 Rends or one year in prison after being found guilty of kidnapping and assault.

They have also been sentenced to a further one year in prison, suspended for one year.

Naidoo and his assistant, Sydney Mufamadi, and the secretary general of the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (NUMSA), Moses Mayeskiso, have lodged an appeal against their conviction and sentences.

They were found guilty of briefly holding a police spy in their offices in Johannesburg and assaulting him after removing him from the street outside the Coasty building.

Naidoo told reporters after emerging from the court room that he found it ironical that authorities “are so keen to convict and sentence us when they have failed miserably in apprehending perpetrators of violence in the townships.
