NEW DELHI, Jan. 25, Reuter: Tribal rebels today hacked to death five people, including. a woman and three children, in continuing separatist violence in the northeast Indian state of Tripura, the Press Trust of India (PTI) said.
The attack was part of a campaign by guerrillas of the Tripura National Volunteers (TNV) to drive out nontribal, mainly Bengali speaking migrants, and create an independent homeland in Tripura. The death toll last year was 103.
The State government has assumed special powers by declaring parts of Tripura as disturbed. The TNV has told its members to boycott Indian Republic Day celebrations.
State authorities say TNV extremists operate from hideouts in neighboring Bangladesh where they receive training and arms.
