NEW DELHI: Private goods transport companies went on a general strike early this week to protest against road tax levied by eight of the 25 Indian states. The call for the strike came from All India Motor Transport Congress which said that the tax had hit the movement of transport in the country and the central government had failed to resolve the issue despite several attempts in the past. The strike led to blockade of goods movement in several states with the result that prices of essential commodities spurted in Delhi and elsewhere.
