PATIALA; Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Gurcharan Singh Tohra has announced that he would neither con- test election to the office of the president of the SGPC nor for membership to its general house. Tohra further said that he would also not contest elections to the Punjab Assembly of to Parliament in future.

Refusing to give any reason for this sudden change Tohra said “I have nothing more to say in this regard.”

Tohra who was elected to the office of the president of the SGPC for the 20th time in November 1993 for one year stood true to his world that he would relinquish the office of president of the SGPC in November 1994.

Under direction from the Punjab and Haryana High Court the Punjab Government is likely to hold the elections of the members to the general house of the SGPC after completing the delimitation of its constituencies.

The elections may be held by the end of this year. The elections to the SGPC general house were last held in 1979.
