AMRITSAR, Punjab, India: The detained Akali Dal Jeader, Gurcharan Singh Tobra’ will be the United Akali Dal Presidential candidate for the coming. S.GP.C. annual election, according to Dal Secretary Manjit Singh (Calcutta), He said the decision on ‘Mr. Tohra’s candidature was taken at the joint meeting of the U.AD. and the S.G.P.C. held in Chandigarh on September 24, 1987. He did not disclose the names of the U.A.D. candidates for other office-bearers for the election to be held at Anandpur Sahib on October 16. The S.G.P.C. elections have traditionally been held in Amritsar but this time Anandpur Sahib has been chosen as the venue. Mr. Tohra who is S.GP.C, President is detained under National Security Act in Rajasthan. Mr, Manjit Singh stated that the return of Prof. Darshan ‘Singh to Amritsar to resume his duties as acting Takht Chief would help restore the religious atmosphere in the Golden Temple, When asked to comment on Prof, Darshan Singh’s statement that the Unified Akali Dal was requesting him to return to Amritsar without the prior consent of the freedom fighters, he said the U.AD believes in the supremacy of the Akal Takht only. He hastened to add, let Prof. Darshan Singh return and every the be will be all night.
