CHANDIGARH, India, July 27, Reuter: Gunmen shot dead three Sikh men a woman in Punjab today, bringing the July death toll from violence in the northern Indian state to 200.

Officials in the State capital Chandigarh said the killings this month were the highest since more than 10,000 people died when the Indian army stormed the Golden Temple in Amritsar in June, 1984,

This month’s victims included more than 40 Sikhs, officials said. Police also shot dead at least 26 freedom fighters but suffered four casualties themselves.

More than 620 people have been killed so far this year compared with 640 for the whole of 1986.

In today’s killings, gunmen on scooters fired automatic weapons at three Sikh men in separate incidents and wife of a suspended Sikh policeman was shot by several men.
