ISLAMABAD(PTI): Thousands of tearful mourners attended the funeral of former Punjab Chief Minister, Ghulam Haider Wyne, on Sept.23, in his hometown Mian Channu, as the authorities announced that members of Maluka clan had killed Wyne in revenge on Sep.29.
Wyne was also the president of the Punjab unit of former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan: Muslim league party.
The funeral took place amidst. tight security, as police and paramilitary authorities continued a manhunt for the four assassins, identified as relatives of the notorious criminal Jahangir Maluka_
Calling the killing of Wyne an attempt to sabotage the clection process, Sharif hoped that the polls would be held as per schedule next month.
The government should project the real motive behind the assassination, he said.
Reports reaching here said the assailants of Wyne, who was gunned down about two kms from his home town while returning from an election meeting, had told him that they were avenging the killing of their brother, who was killed in a police encounter in August last year.
Several leaders, including the Pakistan peoples’ party co-chairperson, Benazir Bhutto, have condemned the killing.
