The Sikh annual parade held in the heart of New York city on April 22, 1989 is a proud enrichment of the cultural tradition of the great metroplis. The parade something on the lines of St. Patrick’s Day celebration, was attended by about 12,000 Sikhs men, women and children who were attired in their Vaisakhi best from traditional dresses to more chic outfits representing the varied tastes in the community.
The Sikh Sangat was represented from far and wide; for instance California, Chicago, New Orleans, Washington, North Carolina, New England etc. Of course New York, New Jersey represented the bulk of the participants. The enthusiasm and the urge to perform Sewa in the true traditions of Sikh Maryada could be clearly discerned from the distribution of cold drinks, langar etc.
There were floats representing various facets of Sikh culture, bands, pipes & drums played. One wondered if the parade was being held somewhere in Punjab or New York. Keep up the cherished tradition and we are proud of you, the participating Sangat and the organizing Gurdwaras.
Next year let us do even better!
