Washington: Rep. Wally Herger has added his voice to the many who are seeking justice in the case of Justice Ajit Singh Bains. He has written to the Ambassador of India His Excellency Abid Hussain and to KPS Gill; DG of Police Chandigarh and to Surinder Nath the governor of Punjab.
The letter reads as follows:
Dear (Sir):
I am writing to express my extreme concern over reports by legitimate human rights organizations such as Amnesty International regarding the arrest and mistreatment of Ajit Singh Bains at the hands of Punjab police on April 3 1992.
Through my work in the U.S. House of Representatives I have come to respect Ajit Singh Bains as a reasonable and accommodating voice of reason. Furthermore he is a well-known human rights activist in Punjab and a retired judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
I find these reports of Justice Bains arrest all the more disturbing given the statement of the Punjab chief minister Mr. Beant Singh of April 5 1992 on the All India Radio Network reiterating that the Indian government “is ready for talks with the Akalis (Sikh leaders) and militants.” It is my sincere hope indicative of the Indian government’s true intentions. Furthermore I strongly urge that reports of his arrest he fully investigated and that he be assured his democratic rights of immediate access to legal representation that he be brought before a Magistrate without delay and that he be charged with a recognizably Criminal offense or be immediately released.
