Humanity’s gratitude rests with people like Chief Justice S.M. Sikri, former Foreign Secretary R. Dayal, Professor Rajni Kothari, Madhu Kishwar and the Editorial Board of Avanush/, Knuswant Singh member of the Indian Parliament, Kuldip Nayar, and numerous others who took up the cause of civil liberties and more importantly, the right to life in respect of thousands of hapless members of the Sikh minority community by seeking to uncover the truth. Special gratitude is due to Ms Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay who struggled relentlessly for the better treatment and release of little children who had been arrested as “infant terrorists.”
This publication, concerned with civil liberties and human rights issues relating to Punjab, could not have been possible without the active Support and help of numerous persons who gave their time and energy enthusiastically. David Ikle and DK Raman were particularly helpful in setting the theme of the publication and undertaking different responsibilities which made the venture a success. Appreciation is due to a number of American and Indian scholars, who want to remain anonymous and made useful suggestions in relation to the contents of the publication.
