DHAKA Indefinite curfew was clamped Wednesday on several parts of Dhaka city and the entire Chittagong district following communal disturbances and arson in which 10 Hindus reportedly lost their lives.
The disturbances were sparked off following attempts by Kar Sevaks (voluntary workers) to begin construction of a temple at the disputed Mosque site at Ayodhya, which Hindus claim as the birthplace of lord Rama.
Curfew was imposed on Sutrapur, Kotwali and Lal Bagh areas ‘of the old Dhaka after sporadic violence and arson.
There was, however, no report of any casualty.
Slogan shouting demonstrators protesting the incidents at Ayodhya went on rampage in the city centre in Dhaka as well as in the old town setting a fire temples and business establishments of the minority community, eyewitnesses said.
