NEW DELHI: The site in Ayodhya on which foundation stone was laid by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (a staunch Hindu organization) was not disputed, an order issued by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court on November 7, clarified, the Lok Sabha was informed.
Mufti Mohammad Sayeed told members of the House Saifuddin and Uttam Rathod that the Uttar Pradesh government had identified the concerned plot as “Nazul plot no 586”.
According to competent legal opinion obtained by the state government, it was a big plot and the whole of it could not fall within the limits spelled out by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court, the minister said.
The foundation stone-laying for a temple raised much storm before the last general elections in November this year. This Hindus were demanding a temple to be built on the site, where a mosque built by the first Moghul emperor Babur now stands. Over 1000 Muslims are said to have died in clashes recently over the issue.
With political leaders fanning communal passions, clashes broke out all over the country as the VHP declared that it would lay the foundation stone for the temple at the site, known as Ramjanam Bhoomi. The foundation was finally laid on a plot adjoining the Babri Masjid.
