CALCUTTA(PTI):Harassment of women, or ‘Eve teasing as it is popularly called here, is on the upswing in the bustling city, which once held it women in high respect, according 10 a recent report on “violence against women” by the Human Resources Development ministry.

Within a span of five years, West Bengal has seen a phenomenal increase of 637.5% in 1991, While 48 cases were reported in 1987.

The figure shot up to 354 in 1991, As many as 120 cases of Eve teasing were reported during 1992. A scribe, Ananya Chatterjee however partially rests the blame on the women themselves,

Their ignorance of the laws and their reticence to report such matters to the police allows the Eve teasers to go about their task freely.

Perhaps, it is the apathetic attitude of the people and in case of young girls the unwanted publicity and “bad name” that is heaped on the victim which dissuades most from Reporting to the police, she said.
