WASHINGTON: On December 3, 1989, symposium was held on Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s life at the University of Maryland by the Indian Community of the Metropolitan Area from 3 pm to 5 pm.
Sikh Foundation of Virginia (SFV) was represented by Mr. Balwant Singh Multani, Trustee and member of the Sikh Affairs Committee or SFV. The function was attended by some 200 participants.
Speaking on “Relevance of Guru Nanak Dey Ji’s Teachings in Modern Times Mr. Multani emphasized the philosophy of Guru Nanak Dev Ji then and now. He denounced the administration for the atrocities being committed and
the human rights violations of Sikhs in India.
Also he expressed a ray of hope in the new administration in working out a viable solution for the Punjab problem, and restoring basic human rights in Punjab.
Other speakers at the symposium paid rich tributes to Guru Nanak and his philosophy, and his way of communication to shun the caste system, meaningless rituals, and superstitions. Guru Nanak lead the life what he preached. It Was intentioned that Guru Granth Sahib is the only Holy Book in the world where equality of all human beings is preached, and hymns of bhagats irrespective of their caste and creed have been embodied truly an eternal symbol of ‘equality.
