GENEVA: Sweden has rejected the CBIs request for reopening an investigation into the Bofors kickbacks.

The Indian request contained no new elements and there is no reason to investigate the matter further, “Prosecutor General Thorsten Johnson told the Indian Express. He added that all the elements available with the Swedish investigative process had been examined earlier and since the Indians have not brought anything new to the case” I did not see any reason to change the earlier decision.”

The Swedish decision comes as no surprise and raises some crucial questions about what the CBI was trying to do in the first place. Sources in Sweden said last week that by seeking to reopen the case just some weeks before the deadlines runs out, leaves the impression that Indian investigators were themselves writing the cases epitaph.

With an official “no” from Sweden, the CBI can make the case that despite its efforts it has received no cooperation from that country.
