NEW DELHI: The Swedish authorities have asked India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to send a formal request regarding cooperation with the Swedish Interpol in the investigation of the controversial Swedish Bofors gun deal.

CBI sources said here Sunday the Swedish authorities asked for a “letter rogatory” after CBI director Rajendra Shekhar wrote to them seeking their assistance following the registration of the first information report on the alleged pay-offs in the gun deal on January 22.

However, the sources said the Swedish authorities were yet to take a formal decision. The letter rogatory was being sent through the diplomatic channel,

Meanwhile, a Delhi court will Monday pronounce its order on a C.B.l application seeking a communication to the Swiss judicial authorities to allow assistance to the Indian investigators probing the gun deal kickbacks,

The 1.3 billion dollar gun deal for the purchase of Howitzer guns from a A B Bofors of Sweden rocked the government of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi with the press and the then opposition alleging that millions of dollars had been paid as bribes to top Indian politicians and bureaucrats to clinch the contract.
