KUALA LUMPUR: Nobel laureate, Suu Kyi, leader of Myanmar’s National League for Democracy has been expelled from the league by its central committee, the state radio and television reported Sunday night.
According to reports here, Aung san Suu Kyt, general secretary 0! Me league was expelled because of her alleged links with rebel organizations and for receiving indirect foreign aid..
Although the NLD had won over 80% of the seats in the May 1990 general elections, the military regime has refused to hand over power despite international pleas. The government instead arrested and detained many of the party members.
Last Tuesday, the 1991 Nobel peace prize was formally conferred on Suu Kyi in her absence. The same day, hundreds of students demonstrated on the campus of Yangon University, demanding her release. The University was immediately besieged by troops.
