BOMBAY: Is the recent spurt in violence the world because of a sunspot peak?
An unexplained correlation exists between sunspot peaks and violence on earth as has been witnessed over many 11year sunspot cycles, according to Dr VS Venkatavaradhan, director of Nehru planetarium,
He told PTI here that growing incidents of violence all over — murders, spate of immolations, shootouts and accidents seem to be increasing with the number of sunspots.
Sunspots during the past few weeks have gone over the 200 mark, he says.
Unlike Shakespeare, who in his play “Othello” blamed the moon for violence, Venkatavaradhan said “it is the error of the sun that he sports more spots than normal and makes people mad.”
Sunspot activity is expected to peak early next year and “it will take at least a year for the peak to taper off. The minimum will be reached in 1995.” He said.
