SRINAGAR, INDIA, Aug 23, Reuter: Sunni and Shia Moslems at odds over the death of Pakistani President Mohammed Zia-Ul-Haq, fought with stones and knives in Northwest India during a Shiite festival, police said on Tues” day.
They said two people ‘suffered knife wounds during the clashes on Monday in the Kashmir City of Srinagar, where four people were killed last week during protests mourning the death of Zia in a suspicious plane crash.
Police said relations between the two sects grew strained during the weekend when rumors swept the Sunni community that Shias were celebrating Zia’s death.
The suspected assassination of Zia has also raised’ tensions between Pakistan’s Sunni and Shiite Moslems.
