MADRAS: The body of N Shanmugam, one of the key suspects in the assassination of former premier Rajiv Gandhi, was found hanging from a tree in Vendaranyam in Than javur district of Tamil Naduearly Saturday, official sources here said.
The sources told PTI that Shanmugam, who was flown from here to his native Kodiyakadu village last week to unearth huge quantities of explosives, wireless sets and fuel belonging allegedly to Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam militants, escaped Friday night from police custody when a constable took him out to enable him to wash his hands.
The special investigating team (SIT) and police, which had launched a massive manhunt late Friday in Vedaranyam area, found the body hanging from the tree. The body was identified by Shanmugam’s wife and an open inquest headed by two doctors.
