This letter was originally written in regards to a program on CBS’ “60 Minutes” regarding female infanticide

Dear Mr. Safer:

Few months ago, I happened to watch your superb program on India dealing with the killing of baby girls even before they are born. Ever since, I had been thinking but couldn’t write to you. However, on June 13, 1993, I understand there was a rerun of the same story. This has prompted me to write and share with you my concerns on a similar related topic.

Last month, I was in New Delhi on a visit, I personally assessed the medical care as given to the patients. Keeping in mind the topic of your 60 minutes’ program, I have this statement to make: Our modern western technology is based on sound scientific principles principally designed for those humans who also cherish the same values in their intellectual and mental framework. The Ultrasound (as an example) as one technical tool has been designed for a specific medical purpose. But, once transplanted in India, a technological metaplasia takes place. The Ultrasound’s real purpose is subverted; only to be replaced by those values designed to pursue evil practices, recorded clearly in the Hindu scriptures, the trouble lies with the Hindu mind, which essentially is incompatible with the western technology. Your story is a proof as well as a reminder that when a western knowhow falls in the wrong hands (as is the given case with India), it guarantees disastrous consequences.
